(Australian Tress Association.!
MELBOURNE, February 14
With a return of north winds and high temperatures, bush fires sprang up in Victoria yesterday >at several points, but a cool change to-day has brought the bush-fire danger to an end for the present. In Melbourne the 'temperature readied 106.5 degrees, and up to 110 degrees was recorded in the country. The city yesterday was shrouded in the smoke of the bush fires. Although 40 houses were endangered in various places yesterday, only four were destroyed, the change of wind sweeping the hres back into burnt-out country. Firefighters are still standing by in case of emergencies. An open finding was returned by. the Coroner to-day at inquests on the eight victims of the Toolangi fire last month. The Coroner said he was unable to say with certainty how the fire began, but he was inclined to agree with forest officers that the fire was deliberately lighted. The total of the fire relief fund has now reached the £200,000 mark, but the claims lodged already total £1,000,000
