Davis, the ’warship, Achilles, said from Devonport naval base at 10.30 for England, where it will refit and return to New Zealand in May next. A large crowd assembled near the berth, and while, a band on the quarterdeck played rollicking naval airs appropriate to the occasion, the final good-byes were said between the men, their wives, children, and sweethearts. Then all aboard and as the vessel drew away there was a strange silence, followed by mighty cheers from quayside and the vessel. A bevy of small craft escorted the warship down the harbour. Her route will be Suva, Tahiti, Panama, and Jamaica. Commodore Glennie is in command.
