The next meeting of the Westland Centennial Organisation will be held at Greymouth at 7.30 o’clock on Wednesday evening. The business will be important as leading up to the arrangements for the collection and preparation of Coast, exhibits for the Provincial Court which it is hoped to make an interesting feature at the New Zealand Exhibition. The big-dis-play at Wellington, will open on the Ist November next.

The Hon. P. C. Webb visited Denniston yesterday, and while on route inspected the brick works of Waimangaroa, which works he expected would require to bo extended in the near future. Heavy rain at Denniston prevented the Minister irom carrying out his intention to make an inspection of the Westport Coal Company’s mines, in which he formerly worked os a miner.

Ten permanent private placements were secured this week by the State Placement Service, at Greymouth, comprising one bushman, three dredge hands, four general labourers, one general farm labourer anti one sawmill hand (shabby). In addition, 17 men were placed in State Departments or in subsidised full time employment.

It is probable that Riccarton stables will once more be strongly represented at the West Coast meetings. H. In the Warden’s Court at Hokitika yesterday afternoon before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., Warden, an application by the Maori Gully (Kokiri) Gold Dredging Coy., Ltd., for an ordinary prospecting license of 100 acres in Ills. 15 and 16, Waimea S.D., was recommended to the Minister of Mines for his consent. A second application by the same company for two residence , sites of a-half-acre each, on Callaghans road in Bis. 15 and 16, Waimea S.D. for a term of 42 years was similarly dealt with.

Nominations for all events at the Westland Riming Club’s Christmas meeting on the 28th inst. (Wednesday), close on Tuesday'evening at 8.30 o’clock. A good day’s programme has been put forward. The principal open event is worth £l5O, and the winner receives also a. valuable and useful trophy donated by Mr J. W. Greenslade, of Greymouth. In addition to six galloping events, there are two trotting events listed, for which Mr E.-Keating of Reefton, is donating a gold mountid whip in each case.

As the result of an ignition of gas in Hunter and Party’s Co-operative coal mine, above Dunollie, about 7.30 o’clock yesterday morning, Mr Louis Smithson, 45, married, of Runanga, was" severely injured, suffering shock and severe burns to the face, head, back, arms and legs. Previously, gas was non-existent in this particular mine, and it was the practice of all employees to use naked lamps. Dr W. : J. Dickel, of Runanga, treated Smithson for his injuries, and he was later admitted to the Grey Hospital. His condition last evening was reported to be satisfactory, but it will be several days before the. full extent of the injuries can be ascertained. The Chief Inspector of Mines, Mr W. Parsonage, made an inspection of the mine yesterday morning. No damage was caused to the mine, and work will resume cm Monday. In future, safety lamps will be used in this mine.
