A BOILING SPRING, WHAKATANE, September 15. While excavating, in an endeavour to locate an additional supply of boiling water at the Awakeri hot springs reserve, a workman broke the crust over ■somij pumice strata, with ibis spade, and ho struck a boiling spring. Water gushed out from the spring w'th a roar, causing six workmen anu an engineer to run clear. It is estimated that the volume of water from the new spring is suflicient to fill a fifteen-inch pipe. The workmen had divined the spring by the use of a willow stick, prior to digging a trench. In the course of the excavations, a full human skeleton, which was oov* ered with the remains of a flax mat, and also other human hones, were unearthed, they indicating that the . Maoris had used these springs for curative purposes before the Europeaii settlement of the district.
