NOVEL LEGACY.
BETTER BEER FOR SAILORS. • LONDON, August 14. “Better beer for sailors” is the watchword of a campaign begun by a lady. In the Times, a personal advertisement offered a legacy of £IOOO to provide wholesale beer for sailors ashore. In a letter of explanation, Mrs Blanche Seaman, of- Cyprus; suggests that the drink available at the dockside is often doctored. This, - she says, could he countered by the provision, under tlie control of sailors’ institutes, of decent beer at reasonable charges, hut many societies are bound by the dead hand of prohibitionist benefactors. Still, where the. plan has been tried it has succeeded.
