GUARD’S DEATH
BUN OVEIi BY TRAIN. (Per Press Association—Copyright). WELLINGTON, June 15. Edward Furness, a railway guard, aged 30, of Tlnrndon Quay; was killed outright in Thordon railway yards about 0.25 this morning. Deceased is an ex-Roval Navv man, whose wife lives in England. He served during the war as a hauling telegraphist. He was on a stock train bound for Petone. It was waiting for the signal to proceed, and as customary, the fireman waited for the guard to give the signal to go, after the lights had changed. The fireman saw Furness give the signal and the train moved off and that was the last seen of him alive. The van was about the middle of the line of trucks
The driver ol another locomotive in the yard noticed one of the rear
trucks was derailed, and blew three or four blasts on the whistle. The stock train stopped, and the driver and fireman went back for the guard. They could not find him in the cab, and his body was discovered behind the train, the last ten trucks apparently having passed over it. It is presumed that the guard slipped, after giving the signal. None saw the accident.
