ACCLIMATISATION

WESTLAND SOCIETY MEETS. The usual monthly meeting of the Westland Acclimatisation Society was held last evening. Present:—Messrs C. L. Harper (President), W. , Nimrno, Jack Preston, D. J. Evans, J. N. Robinson, Dr Telchelniann, K. K. Morris and the Secretary, A. C. Armstrong. The North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society advised, that it would endeavour to, procure a supply of-hares if the Society would get the consent of the Internal Affairs Department to the transfer. The South Island Council of Acclimatisation Societies forwarded a draft of the proposed .-.rules for all South Island Societies and asking if some are acceptable to the Westland Society. The President and Secretary were appointj ed to report; -on the matter at' next , meeting. 1 The Department of Lands and Survey gave detailed infornv’tion regarding the portion of Lake Mahinnpua set n- ! side as a Scerifc Reserve and would rot agree to the granting of permits to shoot game during the shooting seaso:. ; also 'pointing out that the Lake is becoming increasingly popular as a nicnic resort and it was considered iindesir- | able that firearms should be carried or I discharged in a locality where large numbers of people fairly frequently congregated. The Department also requested the Society to consider the handing back to the Crown of the road reserves around the Lake and along Mahinapua Creek, comprising an area of ,247 acres, which were vested in the Society by the Mahinapua Creek and Lake Reserves Act. 1893.—-Received. The Secretary was instructed to advise the Department that it could see no valid reason why the Reserve should be handed back tc the Crown and to .point out to the Department that it does net agree with the statement that the Lake is becoming increasingly nopu-' lar as a picnic resort—particularly in the shooting season. - The Department of Internal Affairs (Rotorua) acknowledged receipt of an order for 200,000 Rainbow trout tved ova. —Received.

From Department of Internal Affairs, Wellington, regretting that.it could not agree to transfer of Canadian geese from Arahura'to Mahinnpun Lake owing to the damage done by these birds. —Received. Tt was decided to recommend to the Marine Department that the Single River fishing license be raised for this District, from 10/- to 15/-. The Department of Internal Affairs advised that a Dominion allocation of £llOO had been made out of the gross opossum revenue of £4910/4/6 and the amount allocated to the Westland Society was £sl/11/4. The Marine Department advised that 200.000 quinnat ova would be esupolied to the Society. The Secretary was instructed to send a letter of thanks for the supply. The Secretary reported that be had received advice of a run of Quinnat Salmon in McDonald’s Creek at Lake Mapourika. It was decided to investigate the report during the week end and advise the Marine Department of the result of the investigations. Accounts amounting to £2/13/3 were passed for payment. The Secretary .reported an increase in the shooting licenses issued this season as compared with last year.
