The Washington correspondent of the “New York Times’’ says: Britain and the United States are approaching an agreement regarding the status of Canton Island and KnderImrv Island in tho Pacific, with the prospect of an arrangement lor joint jurisdiction over both. It is expected that a formal announcement will be made soon of the general terms, and that then detailed supplementary collateral questions will he taken up. including the status of other small islands throughout the Pacific. Jurisdiction over these islands is an open question in view of the uncertainty surrounding, their discovery. It is eventually intended to carry the negotiations to the Antarctic area, tho negotiations Inter including other countries with interests in the areas under scrutiny.
