The winner of the third heat, U Seott, had a hostile reception when h returned to scale, probably because o his rather indifferent displays on Un ipening days, when his great hursts o speed were not carried on with gooi results.

U. SCOTT’S WIN.

CHANGE OF GEAR

CHRISTCHURCH, April 27

U. Scott’s reversal of form may ha explained by a change of gear. On uk. opening days U. Scott had raced in an open bridle, but before the race yesterday an application was made for a change. This application is appears v.a.refused and the horse’s connexions, believing (it is reported) that with an open bridle U. Scott would ‘‘pull him self to pieces,” threatened to withdraw the horse. U. Soott, however, was permitted to start with a "hange in gear, and went on to show himself a very good stayer, and win in handsome style.

After the race a protest was entered by the connexions of the second horse, Pot Luck, and the stewards have deferred a decision on the matter until its meeting at 7.30 p.m. to-day. Place dividends were paid on the second and third horses, but payment of win dividends have been withheld in the meantime. It was an unfortunate ending to a great day’s sport.
