INSOLVENCY ANNOUNCED.

NEW YORK, March 8,

Richard Whitney and Company, one of the most important brokerage firms in the United Sates, has been suspended from the Stock Exchange on the "ground of insolvency, after Whitney’s admission that he was unable to meet his obligations. Mr Whitney was five times president of the. Exchange, former broker for J. P. Morgan, and a member of the Exchange since 1912. His bankruptcy caused excitment in market circles, and contributed to an early decline in stocks of 1 to 3 points.

LABOUR PEER RESIGNS

The “Daily Mail” says: Lord Sanderson, aged sixty-nine, blind from birth, is resigning from the Labour Party, feeling that its attainment of office would menace peace. He declares his inability to work for an organisation whose policy involves so much hatred of foreign Powers, and also which is Prepared to fight on behalf of collective security. Lady Sanderson has also resigned.

DELAYED DROP RECORD

PARIS, March 8

James Williams, in a now delayed drop record, leapt out of a plane when 35,075 feet high, and opened the parachute when 650 feet from the ground. The free drop occupied 140 seconds, and the parachute drop 18 seconds.
