The weather yesterday afternoon was wet, but it cleared as the day wore on. This morning broke fine but cloudy, but the clouds cleared and before noon was bright and sunny promising a fine day. The swimming sports are being held this afternoon under pleasant conditions. Sixteen private placements were effected at the State Placement Office, at Greymouth this week, as compared with I twelve the previous week. There were I thirteen permanent, one casual and two | temporary placements. In addition ! nine men were placed on State works, ! the majority of whom have left for Jackson Bay.

At the February meeting of the Hokitika Plunket Society Mrs B. L. Wilson (president) occupied the chair over a good attendance of members. The Nurse’s reports for the past three months were read. They showed that the work had progressed steadily. The Rest Room, which is open daily from 9 a.in. to 5 p.m. is proving a great boon to visitors and country residents.

“The Government’s housing scheme will he a gigantic failure. The houses are nothing more than pill boxes, and the-building of the settlement at Auckland was nothing more than the creation of a modern slum.” said Mr W. J. Broadfoot, member of Parliament tor Waitomo, addressing a public meeting at Waimate. The people, and the members of Parliament, were entitled, Mr Broadfoot said, to know the figure for the expenditure of the scheme, but they could not be obtained from the men in charge of the scheme, and had to be obtained in a round about way from the contractors. None of them had been built at a cost of less than £950, ana in England the houses in the schemes there had been built by private enterprise for £550 each.

Over 80 gold dredge workers are affected by the reported closing down of two dredges and one alluvial claim on the West Coast in recent weeks, "the IJmidi Tin Dredge has ceased operations at Cariiorons 43 men being involved and it is reported that the Okarito Dredge, employing about 20 hands, and the Addison’s Exploration Coy’s claim at Marsden, where about 20 men wore employed. are ceasing operations. The Okarito Company formed in 1928 with a capital of £35.000 had produced 12,403 ounces of g r ’hl valued at £80.017 and had expended £84.077, paying dividends of £31,500 according to the latest Mines Statement. Addison Exploration Ltd., formed in 1953 with £22.000 capital had produced 515 ounces of gold valued at£3lol hut had paid no dividends up till the date of the last, Mines Statement, the expenditure was £28.347. The subserijied capita I of Bundi Tin Dredging Coy. (no liability) registered in 19.34 is £144,716. none of which was subscribed on Hie Dominion Stock register. The dredge had produced 5221 ounces oi gold valued at £38,921. and had nxpenctod £41.358 with New Zealand liabilities of £2782 at the date of the last Mines Statement.

A lilM'l writ has been issued against the Reman Catholic Bishop of Auckland. the Rt. Rev. J, M. Liston, by Mr F L. Turley, secretary of the Westland and New Zealand Timber Workers’ Union. The action is based on an article which appeared on November 4 in the Homan Catholic newspaper, “Zealandia,” of which Bishop Liston is the registered proprietorAlso cited for libel are the printers of the paper, New Zealand Newspapers Ltd., ami the publisher, Air T. J. Shea ban. A notice of the pending action is printed in the latest issue of “Zealandia.” It states that the Bishop has instructed his legal advisers to defend the action, which is set down for hearing at the March session of the Supreme Court at Nelson. In October of last year a telephone message was received bv “I he Press through Mr Turley, as secretary ot the Westland Timber Workers’ Union, and Mr J. Doyle, the president. They stated that they had sent a stronglyworded telegram to the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, asking him to take action against the Bov. Father Tv. D. Crowe for his attack on Communism, which was broadcast from 2YA, Wellington, earlier th(' same evening.
