DARGAVILLE, September 23
Backed 'by a stiong southerly wind and a spring tide, the river here rose very quickly, shortly after noon today and Hooded the town, which, by one o’clock,- had about two loot of water in the main street.
The water made its way into the shops on the lower side of the main street, and lapped at, doorways of even the higher-floored buildings. So suddenly did iho water rise that shoppers were caught and marooned in the shops while the workers who had gone to lunch had to return by wading, their boots and shoes being removed, while the people crept along close to the buildings.
The water at 5 p.m. had not subsided. It was then impossible to estimate what damage had been done. The lower !vino- areas of the surrounding country are also covered with water.
