OFFICIALS SALARY
LEVY ON BOROUGH COUNCIL
OBJECTION TO INCREASE
CAMBRIDGE, September 20.
Indignation was expressed at last night’s meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council, when the Department of Health wrote requesting that the council’s contribution toward the salary and expenses of the inspector of health should be increased from £3O to £55. It was stated that the increase was necessary owing to the restoration of salaries and rising costs. In order to meet this a flat rate of 6d a head of population would b'e the contribution from boroughs. The council’s contribution of £3O a year was due for revision ill 1922, but at that time the question of increase was held over at the reqpest of the council and the contribution had not been increased since then.
Since the present amount was agreed upon, continued the communication, there had been a considerable increase in the population of the borough, so that the. rate a head had fallen to 3.27 d. which was far below the amount paid h'y similar boroughs. On the basis of 6d a head of .population, the borough contribution would be £55, which it. was considered was the minimum amount the council should pay. A motion that the council objected entirely to any increase on general principles, was carried unanimously.
