The Nelson Education Hoard, at its monthly meeting held at Nelson yesterday, adopted a special sub-commit-tee’s recommendation that two separate schools for primary education, taking in all classes, should be established at Westport instead of a large central school. The present schoolground in Palmerston Street is to be leased for business and residential sites. A previous proposal to erect one school in Brougham Street near the eastern town boundary was cancelled. The* present premises of the National Bank in Bevell Street, which are doomed to demolition, to make room lor the new banking chamber, form one of the old landmarks in Revolt Street. In its earlier years it was the home of the Union Rank of Australia, until the branch at Hokitika was closed. Some years later the National Rank, which had its quarters at that, hime, where (the .'Ujnitni Steamship offices are now situated, purchased the present site and removed thereto, where its business lias since been carried on. There is to be a general rebuilding and renovating scheme carried out on the premises of the National Rank iii Revell and Hamilton Streets. The work to be effected includes the erection of new banking, premises on the present site in Revell Street. This will be carried out in reinforced concrete, specially designed for earthquake resistance. The bank manager's residence adjoining, will undergo very extensive alterations and repairs. Mr W. H. Trengrove, A.R.1.R.A., ot Christchurch, is the architect, and Mr J. L. Pugh, of Christchurch, is the successful tenderer. Work on the residence has been commenced to-dav.
