DIVER’S ESCAPE
HEAD IN SHARK’S JAWS. SEVERE INJURIES SUFFERED. SYDNEY, Sept. 2. Savagely attacked by a shark, lona, a native diver, was admitted, to hospital on Thursday (Island, Northern Australia, suffering from bites. He claimed that his head at one time was in the shark’s mouth. He said that he poked his thumbs in the shark’s eyes and the shark let him go. His condition is reported as being satisfactory. A doctor took two hours to stitch the wounds in lona’s face, neck and chest. The native sat up while this'was being done. He bore the marks of two rows of shark’s teeth and more than 150 stitches were inserted. lona was diving from the lugger Sau, near Maubu Island, 70 miles from Thursday Island. He was in two fathoms of water when he saw a shark coming toward him. It i'seyieil his head. After releasing his head from the shark’s jaws lie shot to the surface and was pulled into the boat by comrades. He did not lose consciousness, either when the incident occurred or ivhen receiving medical attention, hut he stated that he felt a little faint. The shark was about 10ft long. ir-nnrrm ——
