U.S.A. JUDGE

CHARGES MADE (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright), WASHINGTON, September 13. The “Post Gazette” has begun the publication of a series of articles containing charges against the newly-ap-pointed Supreme Court Judge, exSenator Black, of Alabama. The “Post” charges Black with accepting life membership of Ku Klux Klan on September 2, 1926. The newspaper also alleges that Black has never resigned from the organisation. The articles are purported to be the official records of the Alabama Ku Klux Klan. Formerly Senator ‘Hugo L. Black', the Democratic member from Birmingham, Alabama, he was appointed by Mr Roosevelt to succeed Air Jus- , tice van Demanter on the Supremo Court. He has the support of the Committee of Industrial Organisation.

His appointment to the Supreme Court was confirmed by the Senate b.v 63 votes to 16, after hours of bitter debate.

Tt was in this debate that Mr Justice Black was accused of an affiliation with the Ku Klux Klan, and also of a campaign against Al Smltn in the elections of 1928. Even after the confirmation of his appointment several senators wore not. satisfied with his eligibility, and it was thought possible that the Question would be taken to the supreme Court.
