HOTEL BLOCK

A GOVERNMENT PURCHASE (Per Press Association —Copyright). WELLINGTON, September 10. Arrangements have been completed for the purchase of the Hotel Arcadia, Wellington, by the Government. The purchasing Department is the State Fire Insurance. Office, and the vendor, the present owner of the property being a Temuka resident. Tho date of taking over the hotel remains indefinite. The Hotel Arcadia is a well known building at the junction of Stout Street and Lambton , Quay. The building stands on a triangular block of land with a 68ft frontage by 120 ft depth. It has been made quite clear that the acquisition of the Hotel Arcadia does not mean its end as a place of. lodging. The Department Ims secured the freehold as a step towards tne ultimate development of the block to consolidate Government property m a valuable mid-city area. There is no present intention of interfering with the hotel building. The building adjoins the present State Fire Insurance building. N.Z. PICTURE BOUGHT. ADELAIDE, September 9. The original painting of “Simpson and the Donkey,” a Gallipoli scene, by the New Zealand artist, Sapper Moore Jones, has been bought for the South Australian Government. PAN-AMERICAN AIRWAYS. WELLINGTON, September 10. Mr H. Gatty said to-day, that lie hoped it would be possible to arrange a visit to Wellington bv one of the Pan-American flying boats, as an extension of one of the sur\ ey flights to be made before the end of the year from ’Frisco to New Zealand.
