Under the conditions tlie match provided interesting football and a good game was witnessed both packs of forwards providing plenty of action. In the first half. Westland had undoubtedly the best of the play being in their opponents territory for most of the spell. in the second half, however, the South Westland forwards livened up play considerably hold.ng the Westland pack and constantly testing the Westland defence. King, Harrison and Thorpe wjere prominent in the Westland pack, Mc- ', Glashan at half, West on the wing, ; and Roberts at second five eighths bei ing the most impressive of the backs. Garden at centre three-quarter proved a good link both on attack and defence and saving his side on more than one occasion. Agnew at full-back was overshadowed by his southern opponent who handled the greasy hall and kicked exceptionally well. South Westland, playing against c strong wind, kicked off and put Westland on attack with a long kick down field. The second spell opened with Westland again attacking and soon afte. the kick off the reds were awarded a penalty well out on South Westland’s 25 but Agnew failed to add to the score. A forward rush to South West land’s goal bile saw the southerners make a timely touch down. The southerners full back then paved the wa, for the nicest movement of the day I culminating in a well-deserved try lcr South Westland, when he turned de fence into attack with a long kick whic-i found a gap in the reds territory, and from a following scrum in Westland 25 the South Westlanders backs fashed into action leaving the defence standing for Vincent to score a -good try. The kick failed. Westland 3; South Westland 3. South Westland again looked dangerous but a free kick following a penalty for lifting feet in the scrum gave Agnew a chance to ease the pressure. South Westland however led attack after attack to Westland 25 and just missed a score when Thiele was lofted out at the corner flag. A Westland forward rush however, took play to the southerners end of the field where from a scrum just iusU.e the twenty-five yard line McGlashan sent a clean pas s out to Fleming who transferred to Roberts who gave a nice reverse-pass to Tainui, resulting in the last-mentioned going over in a handy position near the posts. 'The game was played in driving rain with a strong westerly wind blowing down t e field. The attendance was badly affected by the weather, and good handling was impossible under the conditions. Nelson won the toss and elected to play with the wind. The halftime score was 3 to 0 in the visitors favour. In the face of the strong wind Buller defended well to keep Nelson d wn to a three-points lead. Buller had a territorial advantage for most ot the game, and although it was a fairly close contest, Nelson never looked like the winning team. Buller played only seven men in the scrum, and the eight Nelson lorwards time and time again pushed Buller off the ball. Buller scored three t: ies, and Nelson one. For Buller, Stewart, HT and Strachan showed up in individual clashes. Neighbours, in his new position at full-back, was sound without being brilliant. ' Dunn and Butterfield played useful games, but Finlavson, at half-back, was •■disappointing, and lacked the dash of his recent displays. Orman, Mason. Wilson, and Lake >llOlO prominent in all the forward play, and Caldwell and Brown showed up with some good efforts in the second half. Phipps and Pratt were always up with the play, but Phipps, who played as

looso forward with a roving commmrn might have been of more use in tin . 1 pack. In-the Nelson side Brinscleu an. [ Cooke had a lot of defensive work t, 1 do, and with Costello, .saved the situa i tion often. For Nelson, Watson an. Busch showed up on attack, but tiiei opportunities were tew.
