The injector of Health stated that repairs had not been effected as was requested and asked the committee, to visit the hotel which in his opinion was one which should be rebuilt. At present it was in a very bad state of repair. Adjourned. Dominion Hotel, Hokitika, Spencer Frank Browne. Applicant stated that he wished to apologise to the Chairman and members of the committee, the Health Inspector and Sorgt. Gilligan, for an e rrbneouu s statement made at the last quarterly meeting by his counsel, which had put him in a very bad light givirnr one the impression that he was trafficking. He stated that the work requested by the Sergeant had been done but that asked for by the Health Inspector had not been attended to. The work asked by the Inspector was of a peculiar nature. There are in the hotel five wooden tanks and these the Inspector asked to be replaced by metal ones, such a. request being deemed unneceessary by -the licensee. M hen the Sergeant liad visited his hotel about May, lie made a thorough inspection of’tho building paying special attention to the tanks. He. remarked upon the cleanliness of the tank in the bar. When the Inspector made his inspection he merely glanced at the tanks and he (the licensee) was very much surprised when a few days later he was informed lie had to have two of them replaced. The only reason lie could elicit from the Inspector for the loplaeenipnt being made was that wooden tanks were not hygenio. An unusual feature of the inspection was that what was considered the best tub in tile hotel, being clean and sound, was condemned also the third best tub, and the other tubs which were clean but not sound were passed as being alright. The chairman of the Committee stated that, at this meeting the. question of whether the licensee wa s catering for the travelling public as he had been instructed to do at the. last meeting was the main consideration. He made reference to a report by the. Inspector of licensed premises which stated that the licensee had done nothing in the way of staffing his hotel for the purpose ol catering for the tra\ effing public The'report said the licensee had stated that the travelling public was sufficiently well catered for by other hotels in the town and that furthermore as the other hotels catering for the travelling public were not fully booked up, the staffing of his hotel to eater for the travelling public was in his opinion unwarranted. His refusal \ as, in his own words, due to the fact that if he began catering f or the travelling pubjic, he would be opening up a sure road to bankruptcy.
The- applicant said that lie had always satisfactorily accommodated, those who had applied for accommodation. In reply to a question from the Bench, the Sergeant asked that the renewal he refused.
The chairman (Mr R. Ferner) said that the position was such that the committee proposed to go fully into the matter and for that reason the application would he adjourned till four weeks from, to-day, when a special sitting would he held at noon, to again consider the application. He strong «revised the licensee to seek a solicitor’s advice on the. position. TRANSFERS Albion Hotel. Grey mouth. W. S. Mitchell to D. R. Dowell.—Granted.
