NEGLIGENT DRIVING

INVERCARGILL, August 11,

On a charge (of • negligent, .driving, Eric Clarence Taylor, garage proprietor. was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, the term to be increased, if necessary, to allow of the right

of appeal The Magistrate, Air W. H. Freeman said that he had never come across a worse case of negligent driving. The Magistrate also remarked that it was the defendant’s fourth offence. Counsel for defendant, Mr G. J. (Reed, when asked by the Alagistrate if he had anything to say as to the penalty, said he would ask that a penalty ,he imposed such as would enable the defendant to appeal, as a list of the defendant’s convictions had been improperly put before the Court, and questions had been asked of the defendant in respect of which no evidence was before the Court. The Magistrate: “I asked the questions, and I had a perfect right to -do so.”

INEBRIATED DRIVER

On a charge of being intoxicated ■while in charge of a motor-car, Graham Allan, .farmer, of W.vndham, was to-day fined £lO and costs, and his license was cancelled for six months.

WANGANUT, August 11

A jury in the Supreme, Court at Wanganui to-day. after a retirement of four and a half hours, awarded two thousand pounds general damages to Ada Harriette Cuthbertson, a married woman of Castlccliff. who lost her left arm as the result of a motor accident.

Special damages, to be agreed noon between the plaintiff and the defendant. were allowed also.
