The annual Ruatapu Druids’ Ball takes place at Ruatapu on Friday, July 9. A ball in aid of the Public Hall funds will be held in the Public Hall, Kanieri, on Friday, June 18. The R.S.A. weekly euchre tourna ment will be held in the Soldiers’ Hall on Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock. Good orders as prizes will be given. Admission 1/-.—Advt. During the week there were frosts on six days, the figures being Monday Tuesday Bj, Wednesday and Thursday each 7, Friday and Saturday each 0, with rain on Sunday morning. The funeral of the late David Spence of ivoiterangi, took place on Saturday afternoon and was followed by many mourners. Per. W. K. D. Davies conducted the services at All Saints’ Church and the graveside.

After a week of fine and almost perfect weather, conditions over the weekend brought a change intermittent rain falling and resulting in miserable conditions prevailing. This morning however dawned fine again although dark clouds threatened.

Passengers on the liner Monterey, which arrived at Auckland from San Fra-ncisco on Friday morn.ng, had a good view of the eclipse of the sun which occurred last week. Guides of the Franz Joseph Glacier, in conjunction with the Nelson Branch of the New Zealand Forest and Bird Protection Society, are about to ring keas in the vicinity of the Glacier, with a view to ascertaining to what extent they travel, and whether north or south across the dividing range, or whether they spend their life around the Glacier. The rings are marked with an address, to which they should be forwarded with information as to where they were obtained. There are no immediate plans for increasing the number of aeroplanes for actual military service in the Dominion according to a statement by the Minister for Defence (the Hon F. Jones) when he passed through Christchurch on his way north on Saturday evening. Mr Jones said that the Government was considering the acquisition of further machines for training. There was, however, no point in importing more fighting aeroplanes until the department was ready to receive them.
