THE GOLD SLUMP. CAPE TOWN, June 10. General Smuts, in a speech at Lydenburg, declared that the recent slump in gold shares had been caused by. rumours that were deliberately circulated so as to persuade share-hol-ders to sell at a loss, so that others could buy at a profit. He added that the best and most reliable information is that the gold position is not in the least danger, and that the gold price will be maintained.
