ST. BERNARD DOGS, \ LONDON, June 10. The Saint Bernard dogs, whose destruction and non-breeding was cabled on June 7, have been reprieved by the acceptance of an. offer of £7OO to save the dogs from destruction. The offer is made by Mrs Einelie A. L. Lind-Af-Hageby, of London, a Swede by birth, .who. is a noted opponent of vivisection and a worker for freedom of women. She proposes that the money shall he used to provide proper runs and accommodation for the dogs, saying she is sure that if hygienic kennels were provided, as in England, there will be no danger of any recurrence of savageness.

THE GOLD SLUMP. CAPE TOWN, June 10. General Smuts, in a speech at Lydenburg, declared that the recent slump in gold shares had been caused by. rumours that were deliberately circulated so as to persuade share-hol-ders to sell at a loss, so that others could buy at a profit. He added that the best and most reliable information is that the gold position is not in the least danger, and that the gold price will be maintained.
