MEETING AT GREYMOUTH. The Mayor of Hokitika (Mi' Geo. A. Perry) presided over a meeting of the Westland Centennial’ Organisation held at Grey mouth on Tuesday afternoon.. There were also present Messrs Wi. Meldriun (Mayor of Greymouth), A. H. McKane, F. H. Denton (Borough Council), John Murdoch (Mayor of Loss), P. J. McLean (Grey Harbour Board), Geo. Painment (Kirmara Borough 1 Council), J. By all, J. Muleare, M. Keating (Grey County Council), J. H. Powell (Buller County Council) and E. Stoop (acting-secretary). . The chairman said that Mr D. JEvans was unwell and could not be present*, at the meeting. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon W. E. Parry) wrote congratulating the organisation upon the manner in which the preparations were being made. The Minister also agreed to the preparation of locality maps ot the West Coast from Karamea to •Fiordland for display in the Westland Court at the Centennial Exhibition. The Director, National Broadcasting Service, wrote, agreeing to announcements. being;-made in regard to the thesis proposed when the conditions were completed. The Director 2ZR Nelson, also agreed to broadcast the conditions. The Librarian, Turnbull Library, Wellington, wrote -in reference to the compilation of a history at a fee of £3O or thereabouts, the work to be done by a free lance journalist. E. L. Lord, Christchurch, offered to undertake the compilation in respect of which sections of the work are already prepared by him. The chairman said that it was hoped that Mr Lord would be present. Mr Lord’s account was of only part ol the record of the Coast and might bo worded with the narrative which could he compiled by the Turnbull Library. They wanted a record of the whole Coast as complete as possible, and he ■ thought a book of about 60 pages would be sufficient. He suggested that the matter could be held over till a later meeting. It was agreed that the chairman and Mr Evans report at next meeting. The Geological Director, Mines Department, asked that conditions be. ..set out; particulars in respect to the proposed thesis, in regard to which lie would be happy to act as judge. He also made suggestions for the conditions of the thesis. 1 The chairman said that he did not (think the suggestions could; be bettered. He moved: “That the suggestions contained in the letter from the Director, Geological Survey, referring to the conduct of competition dealing with a, thesis on West Coast mineralogy, hovering the district from Collingwood to- Milford‘ Sound, be adopted. All papers to be sent in by March 31, 1939 and after judging, the award papers be published in records issued in connection with the Provincial Organisation.” The motion was seconded by Mr Meld rum and carried. Contributions totalling £IOO were received from local bodies, the Westport. Council stipulating that its donation ol £8 10s did not place it under any further obligation. Accounts amounting to £l3 7s lid were passed for payment. .nr McLean moved that the chairman and secretary, with power to add, go fully into the cost and report to all local bodies. , • Mr Mekkum seconded the motion which was adopted. The chairman said that further proposals depended upon finance. Until they knew their resources he did not think they should proceed further. \ jyf r Ryall said that the question ot a photographic competition could be gone on with, and he moved that Dr Teichclmami (Westland), Dr McKay (Grey) and; a Westport nominee be added to the photographic competition section and invited to act as an executive in drawing up suggested conditions for the competition; same to be considered at next general meeting. Mr McLean seconded the motion, .which was carried. . Members expressed regret that Me Evans was unwell and hoped that his recovery would be speedy.
