AMALGAMATION

STB CANTERBURY OPPOSITION (Per Press Association—Copyright). TIMARU, May 18. By 13 votes to 12, a conference of representatives of four county councils in South Canterbury 10-day rescinded the resolutions that were carried two weeks ago, endorsing the nrinciple of amalgamation and sugaesting two counties instead of the Minister’s proposal of one big county. The chairman and engineers of the four counties were, at the last conference. appointed a committee to draw up proposed boundaries, hut now that the previous resolutions have been rescinded a complete halt has been called. Prior to to-day’s meeting, indignation meetings were held in two of the counties, and ratepayers expressed strong opposition to amalgamation.
