MAN’S SUDDEN DEATH. ASHBURTON, May 18. While he was replying to a presentation at the A. and P. Association meeting, made him on behalf of the Mid-Canterbury farmers in appreciation of his nine years’ service as Government Stock Inspector, Mr John Washington Smith collapsed, and died. Mr Smith was married with an adult family. He retired on superannuation a few weeks ago. He previously was in the Otago district.
MUTTONBIRDER’S DEATH. INVERCARGILL, May 18. Nancy Zilla Watson, a married woman, aged 20, of Bluff, died to-day on her way back from the Mutton Bird Islands. She had taken ill at the Islands, and she was being brought back to Bluff on a motor-boat.
EARLY ARREST EXPECTED. DUNEDIN, May 18. The police have not yet made any arrest in connection with the assault on Timothy Christopher Gray, the taxi driver, who was hit on the head with a lead-filled bag on Monday night, and thrown frbrn his car on Tomahawk Road, but a full description of the wanted man has been circulated and early developments are expected.
