POLICE CONSTABLE DROWNED.

AUCKLAND, April 30. A police constable, stationed at Port Chalmers, who was spending leave at Mercer, was drowned, when a boat in which he.and a companion were proceeding to a duck shooting stand on the Whangamarino stream, capsized- V this afternoon.

Ledhurst, who was the youngest son of Mr and Mrs T. Medhurst, of Bombay, was horn in Cambridge, and joined the Police Force seven years ago. At the time of the fatality, lie was spending a holiday with his. brother, Mr S. Medhurst, of Mercer. Here his wife was to have joined him after her visit to Ohakune.

Mr W. E. Lead icy, is the new president of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association. The ballot conducted to-day among members gave him a majority of 88 votes over the Rev. F. T. WELLINGTON. April 30

While walking along the road at Maoribank, Hutt Valley, to-night James Henry Colenso, was knocked down and killed by a motor-car. It was travelling in the same direction as Colenso.

The deceased was a middle-aged man from Alfredton, Eketahuna, The driver of the car was Horace jNToel Mason, of Lyall Bay, Wellington.

OBSCENE LANGUAGE

CHRISTCHURCH, April 30.

On two charges of using obscene language within the hearing of persons in Durham Street, Beatrice Passells, a married woman (Mr B. A. Barrel-), was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within two years, a special condition being that she should leave Christchurch within 48 hours.

SHOOTING FATALITY CHRISTCHURCH, April 30

The body of a young man, Alick Edward Smith, aged 24, a teamster employed at the Templeton Mental Hospital farm, was discovered this morning propped in a sitting position in the front seat of his car, which was pulled up on the side of the Lake Sumner road about 13 miles from Waikari. A wound, caused apparently by a shotgun discharge, appeared on his forehead, and a shotgun was lying between his knees.

! A note was found in Smith's poc-ket-book adressed to his wife. Smith had been married only ten days.

GAME SANCTUARIES CHRISTCHURCCH, April 50.

Game sanctuaries have been established at Lake Clearwater, Lake Camp, and Maori Lakes in the Ashburton Gorge, all public domains, State Forest reserves, and on the estate of Mr G. W. Lead lev, Elgin.

OIL STOVE EXPLOSION WELLINGTON, April 30

. The explosion of an' oil stove* in a four-roomed cottage in the Ngahanranga Gorge, about 250 yards above the meat 'works, shortly before 11 p.m., resulted in the sole occupant of the hut, Mr F. Knox, an elderly man, suffering shock and burns to the face and 'hands. A fire, was started by the explosion, and despite the strenuous efforts of the Wellington. Fire Brigade to save the building by running leads from the Ngahauranga Stream, the fire had such a hold that the cottage was destroyed.

posed loan of £465,000 for the new' hospital wing, was received at a meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board. However, the proposed loan of £150,000 for a nurses’ home and boiler house additions, lias been reduced to one of £79,750 for the nurses’ home. The boiler house proposal has been referred back for the Board’s reconsideration, as the Loans Board considered the new plant unnecessary.

It was decided that in spite ■of the objections from a number of districts to the building scheme, the architect should go ahead with the plans. A motion was carried that the Finance Committee of the Hospital Board should interview the Minister of Finance and ask the Government to find the amount of the loan.
