THEFT CHARGE

AGAINST SHAREBROKER. Per Press Association Copyright. CHRISTCHURCH, January 19. Evidence was beard to-day in the case of William Wallace MeCellaud, share broker, ol Christchurch, wfio was charged with stealing various sums of money, given to him as payment for shares, which, it is alleged, were never received by the complainants.

The case was heard by Air E. C. Le.vvy, S.AI. After evidence had been taken, the case was adjourned sine die. Chief Detective Dunlop said that there were fourteen charges, involving a total sum of £2601 8s 9d. Some oi the witnesses concerned were in Australia, and certain documents, necessary for the prosecution, would be required by the Australian Courts until March at least. There was, therefore, no chance of the case being tried at tlx* next Supreme Court sitting. All of the witnesses told similar stories. They had brought shares from AlcCellaml, some weeks later, to sell at an increased price which was then ruling. These witnesses said that they had received contract notes, but no cash.

Evidence was given by Defective ATcKenzie. Ho stated that the accused, in statements to the police, said that he bad in every ease forwarded; the moneys as lie was directed, and that it was not his fault that the share script had not been sent-.
