FIRE OUTBREAK
WAR EHOUSE G UTTED. (Per Press Association—Copyright). WELLINGTON, January 20. An alarm of fire was given at 0.20 this morning by James Dale, a driver of a meat lorry, the outbreak being the premises of Hutcheson and Wilson, in Cuba Street, about 20 yards from the central fire station. The fire broke out on tiie top floor of a three-storey building. This floor, which is occupied by the firm as a warehouse, was completely gutted. The floor beneath, occupied by B. J. .Ball and Co. Ltd., paper merchants, Suffered ..greatly from the water, 'i he Water also got through to the ground floor, of Hutcheson and Wilsons retail department. No estimate of any of the damage suffered has vet been given. FIRE CAUSE WELLINGTON, Jan. 20. The fire in Hutcheson and Wilson’s is believed to have originated by spontaneous combustion, in the workrooms, where canvas was treated with,-water-proofing materials. A good save was effected by the brigade considering the inflammable nature of the goods on the uoor, though the front portion of the roof was almost destroyed in - both buildings. The stock was -insured, but the extent of the damage cannot be assessed till a complete investory has been made.
