An operation was performed yesterday morning on Air J. A. Guy at estland Hospital vho suffered a fractured left thigh in the rail car accident. A fatal shooting accident occurrect at Cora Lynn on the Otira-Christchurch line yesterday. The victim was a young man named Leslie Arinister of A\ arrington Street, Christchurch. He was out shooting along with his brother, and the accident occurred when he stumbled and fell, causing the gun t° discharge. His body was taken by his brother to Christchurch in a goods train,
The Hokitika i.s at Westport to-day, and is due at Grcymouth to-night, a »d will come on to Hokitika to-morrow. Messrs M* Houston and Co., notify entries for their stock sale at Kokatahi yards on Wednesday January 27. Mr D. B. Jellie gives a warning of wandering stock on his property at Awatuna. The Gael, which left Hokitika for Wellington yesterday afternoon, put in to Greymouth later for shelter, and left for Wellington again this morning at 4,30 o’clock.
The general monthly meeting of the Hokitika Branch of the New Zealand Workers’ Union will be held in the Town Hall to-i'KH'i’ow (Thursday) evening at 7.30 o’clock.—Advt.
A Southland Aero Club ’plane piloted by Pilot Bradshaw, arrived at Hokitika yesterday, and left later with the object of flying to Balclutha. Visibility was such that the plane had to land at Ikamatua, and later return to Hokitika, There were two lady passengers in the plane. John Kelly, a fireman from the Union Steam Ship Company’s vessel Kaimai, fell against a gangway on the Westport wharf, in the early hours of Tuesday morning, injuring his side. He wa s admitted to the Buffer Hospital. It is understood that no ribs were broken. On inquiry at Westland Hospital this morning in reference to those injured in the rail-car smash, we were informed that the patients were vcr.v much brighter this morning, except that Mr W. D. Mackay’s condition was stiff serious, though he shows a little improvement-. Mr Guy, who was operated on yesterday, shows considerable improvement. An accident happened at Messrs Stuart and Chapman’s mill at Boss yesterday morning, when a single man named Sydney Hall, aged 36 years, was struck by a log and fell on to a truck, receiving body injuries. Ibe .sufferer was brought down to Westland Hospital for treatment. He suffered considerable internal injuries, but this morning was progressing as well as could he expected.
Yesterday afternoon Mr Macklev. General Manager of Railways, paid a visit to Westland Hospital, visiting each of the patients therein who were injured in the rail car smash the previous evening, and conveying to them the sympathy of the Minister of Railways and himself in their suffering, with the hope for their speedy recovery. Appreciation was also voiced of the prompt service given to the injured by the medical and nursing staff of the institution.
Yesterday afternoon the fine sunny weather which had been experienced throughout the previous week mas interrupted by steady rain which commenced to faff about 2 p.m. The wind, which had been blowing from the southerly quarter changed and commenced to blow from the north. The rain fell steadily all the evening, becoming much heavier as the night wore on, while the blow increased to gale force from the north-west. The heavy rain brought down a large flood, bank high in the river in the early hours, and at 4 a.in. the gunge at the Harbour Office showed 1V rise of 13 feet. Just, when fears of a flood were rising, the rain ceased anil the flood started to run out, and soon dropped considerably. A large quantity of drift timber came down with tiie flood.
