LAUNCH PATROL
FOR NORTH AUSTRALIA SYDNEY, Jan. 16. An additional patrol—either a fast launch or a seaplane to ensure the effective policing of northern waters is regarded a s certain. Government action will depend on expert advice, which is being sought from Darwin. The Minister for the Interior (Mr Patersonj declined to discuss the possibilities to-day. A fortnight ago, he said, he had instructed the commander of the Commonwealth launch Larrakia to report on the steps which, he thought, should be taken to strengthen the northern patrol. The Larrakia. has been handicapped by having to maintain a watch on the Timor Sea air mail route, over which there i s now a frequent two-way service. This duty prevents long coastal journeys to apprehend poachers and traffickers in native women. Japanese arc said to be taking advantage of the absence of a regular patrol To encroach on reserves to which they have no right of admittance. Opinions as to the comparative effectiveness of a seaplane and a fast launch for patrol work are strongly divided.
