RANGI WRECK
NO SIGN OF BODIES. ONLY WRECKAGE FOUND. (Per Press Association—Copyright). AUCKLAND, January 17. Search parties by sea and 'and, during the week-end, failed to find any trace of the four men who were drowned on Thursday night, when the scow ‘‘Rangi” capsized in the Hauraki Gulf. Police and residents searched up and down the coast near Tor Bay, where the dinghy, in which the crew were escaping was swamped, but they found only wreckage, while another party, which went by launch as far as Mangawhai Heads, »was also unsuccessful. An aeroplane will search for the bodies to-morrow.
The unidentified member of the crew the youth named William, has now been identified as William Douglas Robinson, aged 20, of Waihi.
ANCHOR STOPS PROGRESS. AUCKLAND, January 17. The Auckland Harbour Board’s tug left port on Saturday morning and picked up the wreck of the “Rangi” three and a half miles south-west of Tiri early in the afternon. The hull was awash, and lying on its - side,' while, some of the logs were still lashed on. ‘ Great difficulty was experienced fn L towing the? hull, as the anchor wa4 r dragging on the bottom. The tug had reached Campbell’s Ray, when the anchor fouled on some rock or obstruction. After attempting to tow the hull until early this morning, the tug left the wreck, as it was thought that the , anchor might foul the overseas cable which comes ashore at Takapuna, or the light cable from Takapuna to Rangitoto Island. The wreck is well out of reach of shipping. Wreckage from the "Rangi” was coming ashore on Saturday all along the beaches of the rocky coast, from Brown’s Bay to Whangaparaoa Peninsula. The stern portion, with the rudder still attached, was sighted floating off Tor Bay in the morning, and was towed in, after five hours, by a dinghy with an outboard motor. The cabin top came ashore at Long Bay, and many of the contents of, the cabin were floated into the beach. They included Captain Petersen’s silver watch, with his initials, safety razor and blade, razor tools, a shilling, a sixpence, and a threepenny piece.
