FOREMAN’S REPORT The. Borough foreman reported on work carried out during the month as follows : The remaiiyng part of the footpath in Sewell St at the Roman Catholic School was finished in asphalt, distance one chain and a half. Kerbing was renewed in Weld St along *to Ros s and Burt’s garage, the footpath repaired with asphalt, and the street graded to the floor of the water channel with asphalt, and three crossings put down, one at Eastgate’s, one at Griffen and Smith’s, and one at Spiers’. A new water .service was put in to Mr H. Stapleton’s in Sale St, and water services were renewed at Mr D. Thomas’ on Gibson Quay, Mr Wild’s in Bealey St, and Mr s Nightingale’s in Brittan St. and the service "'as repaired at the Salvation Army residence in Fitzherbert St; an extra water service was put in at Keller’s Hotel,, taking 1U inch pipes. Bands were put on pipes in Weld St, in Sale St, and in Stafford St.

Three cbivs were spent on the pipe* line between the reservoir and the Lake repairing. Pot holes in RevelL 'Hamilton and part of Weld Sts were filled' with asphalt. The amount of wet weather of late has left the streets in a bad state with not holes, and filling them with gravel does not seem satisfactory, and I would suggest that the Council call tenders for about 300 yards of pea gravel, and procure the tar from the Hokitika Gas Coy, and, tar seal some of them, chiefly Sewell, Weld, Hampden and Sale Sts. being done first, they being the most used streets into town, and the others con'd be done later. If given two coats of sealing it will be the best means of preventing potsoles in the streets. The usual number of leaks wore repaired about town. j

The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was 2ft 7in, and as there is over 160 gallons per minute going in it is surprising there is no gain at night, when this quantity is not used for at, least six hours, the wastage may be some underground leakage, which we have as yet been unable to discover. —Received.

GENERAL Tbe Mayor moved that Mr D. Stevenson, in conjunction with the Fire Brigade, be authorised to make an inspection of the public places of amusement prior to the renewal of licenses. Seconded bv Cr Park and carried. The Town Clerk was authorised to arrange with Hokitika Savings Bank for an advance of £12,000 on account of the water-supply loan.

It was resolved that tbe Mental Hospital be requested to instal a water meter covering tbe supply to the hospital. It was resolved that the Council in future meet on the second Thursday of each month.
