OBITUARY

The death of Mrs Mary Ann Mayes, of Blackball, took place yesterday. Deceased was a native of Bedford, England, and 85 years of age. A daughter (Mrs E. Dpmpleton senr., of Blackball) is left.

The death of Mr, Patrick Ryder, the well known settler of Inchbqnnie, occurred last evening. He was a native of Kumara, 60 years of age, apd was a well known sawmiller, and former member of Grey County Council. He leaves a wife and grown up family.

We regret to record the death of another of tfie 'early identities of the district, Mr John Christian Wells, of Woodstock, passing away at Westland Hospital last evening. The deceased was a native of Kanieri, aged 68 years and had followed mining pursuits over a long period of years.. He was a member of the old First Westland 11 ilies for a long time. In the old coaching days lie was injured in an accident yin the Christchurch road, from which he never fully recovered. He was unmarried, and leaves two sliders (Mrs J. M. Macbeath, of Hokitika, and Mrs H. E. Hughes, of Invercargill) and two brothers ‘vAndvew, of Harihari and Thomas, of Wataroa). The late Mr Elisha Wells, of Woodstock, was also a brother.

The funeral of the late Miss Grace Gibb took place yesterday to Wataroa cemetery, and was attended by a large number of mourners. The service at the Waiho Church was conducted by the Rev. J. Evans, assisted by the Bishop West-Watson, of Christchurch, and the former read the service at graveside. Many floral tributes were placed on the grave'from, sorrowing friends.

The death occurred suddenly at his •residence, Birkdale, Auckland, thi morning of Claude Lockhart Jewell, 64, a Victorian journalist. He was a member of the Auckland “Star” literary staff since 1923. He was at work as usual yesterday. He is surived by a widow, five daughters and 'a son, all single. A Masonic funeral will he held at Birkenhead to-morrow. He was highly esteemed by confreres and a wide circle of friends.
