EXPANSION PLANS I FACTORY-ERECTIONS BEGINS. (British Official TPercfess.J * RUGBY, October 20. Arrangements have been completed by the Air Ministry for the erection of six Government-owned factories for the production of additional Air Force equipment, and the erection of the factories has begun. The firms which have undertaken the erection and management of the factories for the Air Ministry aro the Austin Motor Company, tne Bristol Aeroplane Company, the Daimler Company, Rootes Ltd., the Rover Company, and the Standard Motor Company. “shadow” scheme. The Air Ministry plan to use the engines produced in them to supplement the normal supplies for the expansion of the AirForce. The actories will he closed when the needs are met, and they will be reopened only for immediate operation should a war situation develop. Of the motor firms which have undertaken the erection and management of the factories for the Air Ministry, the Wolseley Motor Company, which Lord Nuffield controls, originally participated in the scheme, out it withdrew. The Wolseley Company, is closing its aeroplane engine factory at Birmingham, and 'it has refused a substantial order for Scorpian engines, which was offered apart from the shadow scheme.
ft is expected that the Secretary of State for Air (Lord S win ton) will make a statement on the subject when Parliament reassembles, including a reference to the Wolseley Company, whose place has been taken by Rootes Securities, Ltd., which controls the Hillman, Humber and other companies. The “News-Chronicle” says that it is understood that the Wolseley Motor Company withdrew from tne Air Ministry’s plan through Lord iNuffield- disagreeing with the Working "of the Government’s contract system.
