The first challenge match for tne Se.ddon shield between Buller (holders) and Marlborough (challengers) will-take place at Westport on Saturday. Both teams are in solid training i'cr the game. A suggestion that assistance should be given by the Government to settlers on second-class land to enable them to cope with the growth of blackberry wa s made by Mr E. L. Cullen (Govt., Hawke’s Bay) in the House of Representatives on Tuesday. “Blackberry,” he said, “is a serious menace on grazing areas. The income of farmers on such areas will not permit of the exi penditure necesasry for clearing the pest;” An old custom is recorded in an Auckland newspaper of July 16, 1886 (fifty years ago): “The new Freeman’s Ba v Hotel was opened yesterday and in honour of the occasion ‘open house’ was kept from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.. “In consequence, people came from far and near, ever from Parnell and Newmarket. Some brought their jugs for beer and others carried their liquor home without a jug. It was necessary at last, owing to the crowd of visitors, to close the side entrances.” j
