The Hippocampe, laden with four tons of petrol, had caught fire, menacing the harbour craft. The Atalante. responding to the owners’ appeals, tried to tow her to the open sea. She broke loose, and so the Atalante attempted to sink her. The first shot from a 75 milimetre gun, landed near the gendarmerie ashore. The second severed the electric cable and damaged a sawmill. The third fell on the beach. The yacht wa s not scuppered until the eighteenth shot. The Minister of Marine has ordered an inquiry, immediately the Atalante reaches port:
