NEW UNION
S.I. DOMESTIC SERVANTS i (Australian Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, June 16. Domestics employed in Christchurch homes, on May 5, formed an ; association which they hoped to make into a South Island Domestic Employees’ Union, hut they have ceen able to do nothing since then because there is no provision in the new legislation removing the legislation bar against awards for domestics provided by the Industrial Conciliation bud Arbitration Act,of 1908, It is thought that the' Government intends to make provision for wages and conditions' of work for domestics under special legislation, but meanwhile- the work of organisation is being held up. -
Special legislation,' defining at least 1 wages, hours of work and holidays in ja way considered sufficient to protect domestic workers from exploitation,'is ’'thought by union official's to be the . most' likely solution. Similar provision is said to be under consideration -for debiting the position of farm •hands. ' ■ Meanwhile the association of do'rnestics already formed iii Christchurch ■‘-'Wili : probably go ahead to obtain re- • gistration.
