LONDON, Juno 9.
: The “News-Chronicle’s*’ Vienna correspondent says : The Government of Austria has granted an amnesty to all political prisoners who had been condemned to no more than five years’ imprisonment. The amnesty applies .both to the Socialists and Nazis who were in prison.
Tho amnesty accords with a promise which was given by the Chancellor oi Austria, von Schuschnigg, at the time that lie put out of the Government Prince Starhemberg (Heimwelir Leader) in order to introduce a more moderate and more conciliatory policy in Austria. By this the Chancellor hopes to widen the basis for support of his Government by winning the goodwill of the workers and of the moderate pro-German element.
It is stated that the amnesty is also designed to help Chancellor von Schuschnigg to 'establish more cordial relations with France and with Britain.
