The Westland County Council which aeld its annual meeting yesterday, carried out the usual change of chief administration. It has been the custom of the Council over* sixty years, to pass the chairmanship round, and onl> once in the time, has the same gentleman held the chair for two years in succession. Air Ward who retire.l from office, was eulogised for his work He has seen several years of service in the Council, and his knowledge and experience will fit him for an executive pos’tion. On this occasion the seat of honour passes to another gentleman who is engaged in farming. Mr J. J. McKay though comparative Iv new as a Councillor, has served long enough to realise the duties of the office, and residins in the centre of the more progressive half of the County, should be able .to render good service. Mr JVlcKay has been active with farming interests, occupying e~e.cutive position in the Farmers’ Union land in dairying matters. As one who lias passed most of his time in the southern district, he has a good deal :of knowledge of that extensive domain ho is now to preside over. From the '.remarks made yesterday by some of the speakers, it is evident opinions as to the bright future in st.o*-e f*r the south are becoming more solidified, and it may be expected more active stepswill be taken to advocate attention to its needs. The County Council plays an important part in the internal economy of Westland. The ratepayers .have been fortunate generally with their choice 01 representatives, who it is widely recognised pay close attention to the welfare of the ’ district Also, the Council is in the nature of a happy family t and sharp discussions very rarely occur. For that reason the new chairman should find Ills duties lightened ai,d generally pleasant Jhe Council has been on good terms with the ratepayers for a long time now, due to the economical administration which permits rating to be kept at a low figure. A good deal ■turns on the administration, and it will be Mr McKay’s special duty to control and direct the' management, and maintain the record of the past.
