Remarkable displays of his abilities were given yesterday afternoon and last night by Mr C. j. S. Purdy, chess champion of Australia, who arrived in the'morning from Sydney. An exhibition of blindfold play was given by Mr Purdy in the afternoon nt the Auckland Chess Club’s rooms against six opponents. Facing the wnll with his back to the chess boards, Mr Purdy made his moves, and such was his remarkable grasp af..the positions that on occasions he corrected the announcer, who, of course, was.'ivatch:jng the boards. Mr Purdy won two Lames, drew three and lost one. At night Mr Purdy gave a magnificent performance by playing 31 games simultaneously, winning 17 games, drawing 10 and losing four. At the concluson Mr Purdy said lie had enjoyed the tournament and had found the standard higher than he had anticipated. Mr Purdy, who is only 28' years of age won the ches s championship of Now Zealand at the age of 17. He is champion of New South M ales at the present time, having won the title for the last two year, and this year he won the Australian champion ship. ,
