Several men suffered minor injuries and others narrowly escaped being swept overboard from the cable steamier Recorder after the vessel left Auckland, toward the end of October, to •repair a fault in . a cable iri Tasman Rea. The Recorder, was .unable to locate the cable had'.setr-out ; to- repair, and it> is believed aj suhiriarine, disturbance has occurred and destroyed it for a considerable length.
Where,the fault is believed to have occurred, the cable is 2700 fathoms, or over three land miles deep, and although dragging was out for several days with four miles' of grappling line, nothing was brought to the surface, but a quantity of lava, • which seemed to indicate a volcanic disturbance below the sea.
