NEW LOCOMOTIVES
FOR N.l. MAIN TRUNK SECTION. (Per Press Association, Copyright). WELLINGTON, December 13. The General Manager of Railways, on behalf of the Board, to-day stateu eight main-line electric locomotives had been ordered for the new electrified section, Wellington to Paikakariki. The order had been plalced with Cory, Wright and Salmon, whose principals, English .Electric Coy., Ltd., London, will work in the closest cooperation with th e railways. The first will be manufactured in England, but the rest will be manufactured at the Hutt workshops, where electrical equipment will be erected, and the locomotives tested before Being put into service. The engines are of the most modern type, and specially designed for ! working on severe gradients and cur- 1 ves, which make railway working in : New Zealand such a difficult profile**, j They will be streamlined, both for im- I proved appearance and perforn*an c e. j Each is capable of hauling a freight ) load of 500 tons each way of the'jour- | noy, and each weighs approximately * 84 tons.
