COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING LAST EVENING’S BUSINESS

The Borough Council met last evening when tjiere were present the Mayor (Mr G- a" Berry), Crs H. L. Michel, E. ■ L. Park, A. Thompson, G. Heinz, and T. W. Duff and J. King. Apologies were received from Crs iE. Teichelmann, A. R. Elcock, and H. T. Parry. West Coast Cinemas Ltd, made aplication for temporary license for new picture theatre to open about Boxing Night; also for installation of water service connection, and permission to instal sanitary conveniences to connect with Borough system.—The application were granted.

The Public Trust Office intimated the Public Trustee is aggreeable to convey sections 3473, 3482, 3483, 3577, 3578, Hokitika, to Council as a gift from the estate of John Roscoe, deceased, if Council would bear the cost of the transfer.—The offer was accepted. Mrs Annie Boyd wrote pointing out the Council had not yet protected the frontages of her property in Jollie St-, through the street level being lower. The matter was referred to the work committee for a report. New Zealand Refrigerating Co., advised the following stock were delivered into Hokitika October 118 sheep, 19 j lambs 1 calf, 2 pigs ; November 126 j sbeep, and 13 lambs. I The Sanitary Inspector wrote reporting inspections for November. The Hokitika Fire Board forwarded the statement of accounts for the year ended March 31. F. J. Andrews made applicaton for a domestic water service connection to Secs 1540-41, Revel 1 and Spences Sts.— Received. Professor Campbell wrote advising be would send his report on the borough water supply at an early date. Protests were received from business people against the Council authorising side shows in right-of-ways off Revell Street. The Council decided not to grant such licenses in future. The Council, in response to further .protests, decided to oppose the erection of an ice cream stall at the intersection of Weld and Revell Streets. Recommendations by the manager for necesary repair work at the abattoirs were approved-

Jt was decided to close the Borough | J office from December 25 to January 2. It was decided to erect notices at the entrance of the borough notifying the maximum speed of motor vehicles within the borough. Stock was slaughtered at the Hokitika Municpal abattoirs during November as follows:—Bullocks 72, heifers .21, cows 19, sheep 239, pigs 11, lambs 17, and calves 6. Condemned 1 cow. Receipts amounted to £63 15s as aganst £6O 3s for the corresponding period last year. The Borough Foreman (Mr F. Chestorman reported on work carried out during the month as follows: — Livingston Street drain was fenced m the west side, for about seven chains, and wire put on the sides of the crossings. A crossing was put in nt. Mr H. Lawn’s section in Brittan Street and water connection laid on. Water connections were also put in at Mr Eastgate’s in Weld Street, at Mr G. King’s in Park Street, and Mr Oliver’s in Park Street. A twenty foot pipe was put in the water main at the corner of Sale and Stafford Streets, and one at the intersection of Sewell Street and Gibson Quay. Fifty-four feet of kerbing was laid down at Ford’s brewery, the footpath levelled, three chains of asphalt put down, and two crossings put in. Pot holes were filled J with asphalt on the highway in FitzHerbert and Stafford Streets, and in Hamilton and Sewell Streets to the clock tower. About 60ft of galvanised piping was laid under the Town Hall to carry away waste water. Bands were put on burst pipes in Stafford Street in two places in Hampden Street in Bealey Street and in Fitzherbert Street. On December 7 the siding at Slip Hill slipped away and the pipes came apart, but were later repaired. A number of leaks were' repaired about town. The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was 7ft Gin.
