GOLF IN RUSSIA

BOLSHEVIKS ADOPT GAAIE

AMERICAN PLANNING COURSES

LONDON, Decembty 11

A Chicago engineer, Mr Leonard Alaeomber, who has submitted to the Soviet organisations a proposal to construct a number of golf courses, and who undertakes to provide initial instruction in the game, is now touring Caucasian, Black Sea and Crimean resorts to find the most suitable sites for the courses, state the Daily Telegraph.

Arrangements lufve been made to give the first demonstration in Soviet Russia as soon as Mr Macomher return. 'Hie 'American Ambassador to Russia, Mr Bullitt, a keen golfer, will drive the first ball on Leninhills Field, on the outskirts of Moscow, where the Americans recently introduced baseball.

Thereafter, groups of Russians will be instructed in the rudimentary principles of the game, which is quite unknown in the country, and has been despised for many years as an individualistic bourgeois sport. Because golf is inseparably associated in the minds of Russians with plus fours, a garment seen only on foreign tourists, Mr Macomher has made a point of informing the Soviet officials that it is possible to play golf in any costume. It is safe to predict, however, that if golf appeals to the Russian public the State clothing shops will soon find plus fours sufficiently proletarian to be sold.
