Acceptances for the first day of the Hokitika races which open on Boxing Day, close at 5 o’clock on Monday afternoon. Owners and trainers should note the hour carefully.

A penalty of 10 per cent is to be imposed on all rates for the current year, levied by the Hokitika Borough Council, which are not paid by March 16, 1936.

Next year a comprehensive survey ot housing throughout the Dominion is to be undertaken in which connection a copy of the Housing Survey Act was received from the Department of Internal Affairs b v the Borough Council last night. The Council did not attempt to go into this huge nutter, but appointed a sub-committe°. consisting oi the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), and Crs H. Michel and T. AY. A request was received by the Borough Council last evening from a retired railway servant, Mr C. P. Denton, of Ross, asking the Council to protest against the construction of the Kapitea road, as it would be competing with the railways in the carriage of passengers and goods. The Council decided to take no action. It was stated by one councillor that the road would not be beneficial to Hokitika, but it was no use trying to fight against it. The Railways Board had objected to it, but their objection had now been withdrawn.

The usual dog fees for the current year were adopted by the Borough Council last evening, namely 10s per animal, except in the case oi shepherds’, drovers’ or farmers’ dogs, in which case the fee of 2s 6d was renewed.

An application for pemission to show pictures at the Princess Theatre on Christmas night, was considered by the Borough Council last evening, and finally refused. It was stated that Christmas Day was regarded as a Sunday, and such an entertainment would be conducted merely for profit. Further, it would be establishing a precedent, and next year it wouid mean Both picture theatres would have to be granted permission. The Council decided to adhere to its principle of the past, and declined the application.

In the past, when the construction of verandahs over footpaths hav e been contemplated, application to tlie town Clerk for permission has usually been forthcoming, confirmation being given at the next meeting of the Council. The Council decided last evening that, in future, applications shall be made to the Council, together with plans showing the contiguity of telegraph and telephone wires to th e proposed work, the applications to bo considered by the Council.

A deputation from the Hokitika Cycling Club, consisting of Messrs R. B. Collett and J. J. Williams, waited on the Borough Council last evening, asking that attention be given to the bad portion of the track in Cass Square making it reasonably safe for cyclists to ride on. The Club proposed to hold c.vch'ng and foot races in the Square, which should prove a source of revenue to the Council as well as the Club. The sum of £2O-was-mentioned a.s being sufficient to meet requirements. The Council gave favourable consideration, and decided to inspect the position before deciding on the work to be due.

The Hokitika Festival opens on Saturday next, Goodwill day. There will be a grand opening with a decorated town by day, and -illuminations by night. The Greymouth Municipal Rand has been invited to visit t-e town, and arrives from the north by the afternoon train. The band will play selections during the afternoon and also at night, and depart north by the night train, which is being delayed till 10 o’clock. The stir in <own already indicates the festival will be inaugurated in a well-prepared manner. Business people generally are making many preparations, and the Hokitika streets are bearing a holiday air already. Throughout the period of the holiday, there is sure to be a large influx of visitors from all parts, of which pre-bookings at hotels and motor garages give a good indication.

Reference to the Christmas bonus to be paid to relief workers was made at the Borough Council last evening, when the Town Clerk (Mr H. G. Coles), in reply to a question, said he could not exactly say what the bonus would amount to. It would be on a sliding scale, and would roughly mean that a single man would receive about £2 ss, while a married man with, say, five children, would get over £4. The method of payment was a matter for each district to decide, and the Town Clerk considered it would be more convenient to make the payment in one sum, instead of two payments nr ibeen suggested. Th e matter was left to file Town Clerk, who suggested Monday, December 23, as the possible date of payment.
