BRITISH SUBSIDY

In reply to a question in the House of Commons about the .continuation of the tramp shipping subsidy. Dr E. Leslie Burgin,- Parliamentary secretary to the Board of Trade, .anion need that after a detailed examination of the operation of the subsidy; the Government was satisfied that it had brought about a distinct improvement in British tramp shipping, and in miployment of British officers and seamen.
These results were: attained not mly through the -direct effects of the •subsidy, but also by' measures of u iperation whijh shipowners bad been enabled to introduce, The withdrawal of the subsidy would endanger the continuance of those- measures of cooperation, and would jeopardise, tne improvement which had been effected.
. The tramp ship-owners’ committee had applied for the continuance of the subsidy, and the Government had -decided to ask Parliament to make available a further sum of £2,000,000 for he period of 12 months from January l, 1938, on the same, general terms and conditions as before.
