There was an unexpected development, in the Lyttelton by-election campaign this morning, when Gordon Stewart Hamilton, a farmer, of Hapuku. near Kaikoura, lodged his nomination for the seat. Nominations closed at noon, the candidates being C. L. Hills (Independent Labour), M. E. Lyons (Government), T. H. McCombs (Labour), and G. 8- Hamilton (Independent).

Early this year. Mr Hamilton announced it was bis intention to stand against Mr Forbes in the Hurunui electorate, and he has indicated he is a strong opponent of the Government. He has a farm at Hapuku, some miles north of Kaikoura in the Wairuu electorate.
