MAGISTRATE’S COURT
HOKITIKA SITTING TO-DAY’S CHARGES HEARD. The following cases wefe dealt with before Mr H. (Morgan, S.M.. in the Magistrate's Court at Hokitika today. Traffic Breaches. John James Bradley charged with driving in a dangerou s manner. The inspector said defendant crossed a narrow intersection at a speed of 20 mile's an hour. There were a number of pedestrians about. Defendant was * lined £1 and costs £1 Os Gd. Nathaniel Brown Was charged with driving a molor vehicle without a license, and was ordered to pay £1 Os Gd the cost's of the prosecution. John Hurren, similarly charged was fined 10s and costs £1 Os Gd, and Edwin jucwis 10s and costs 10s. David Pettigrew was fined 5s and costs £1 Os Gd for driving a car Insufficiently lighted.
Employee's Wages. Wyn Westbrook was charged witl employing a female whom he failed to pay the statutory wages. The inspector said the amount the girl had been under paid was £34. She had received only 8s 6d a week. Counsel (M« Seller*) saiil the employee was only engaged part time and the case, therefore, did not come under the" regulations. The Magistrate said defendant hart underpaid the employee. He was fined £1 I’Os ,and costs. Child Absent. From School. Ihaiah Tainui was charged cn two counts with failure to send his child to school. The Schools Attendance Officer 'Mr W. D. Mackay) said the child had been absent from school for six months continuously. DefendantWas fined 5s and costs 10s. Ownership pfy Car. John Lancelot Menzies. was fined 15s and costs for failing to notify change of ownership of motor vehicle. -Sgt. King said Menzies, the owner of a registered car, sold his car to Walter McLeod and Robert Chapman, who failed to notify change of ownership, and they in turn sold the car to Leo. Hagar,' but again there was no registration or notification o: change of ownership.
Chapman, Hagai- and McLeod, who were similarly charged, • were each fined 15s and costs. • ■s* 154 A . j£S ;.'Hk jfr & £ On Licensed Premises. A charge of being found on the premises of the Royal Mail Hotel, Woodstock was preferred against a man who said he had gone .to the hotel to see. the licensee on business. The Magistrate accepted the excuse, and dismissed the charge. Claim Disputed. , P. J. Kirwan sought to recover from Clarence Hunt, of Kumara, the sum of £4/10/8 for mechanical services in connection with motor repairs. The Magistrate made an order for the amount claimed, and costs Claim for Rent. An order for, eviction, together with a claim for £24 arrears of rent, was sought by J- Y. Finch against John Philip Coulson. The order was granted.
