FIRE BRIGADE

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade was held on Tuesday evening at the Club rooms, when there were present, 'Supt. J. J. McIntosh, Deputy-siipt. L. Ross and 21 members Correspondence was read and dealt witfi. ANNUAL REPORT From a. fire point the Brigade has had an easy year, the only call being to a fire in Shadbolt’s cottage, Fitzherbcrt Street, on May 5, about 8.50 p.m. On arrival, the brigade under Dept. Ross, found’the the had a strong hold in the kitchen where the hot water system was era ted. They very soon had two leads of water on and what- might have been a total loss was quickly diverted into a very good save. Insurance on building and furniture was £950 and estimated fire loss was £IOO. As there had been no fire used in the building on that day the cause of the outbreak is unknown.

He wished to compliment the residents of the town for the great care they observed, and thus reducing the fire risks during the very dry seasons of last spring and summer. We had a trial of the new ele-tx-ic fire hell ringing system and found that certain adjustments were necessary. Another triali which will be advertised, will he given within n few clays. He congratulated the brigade ori the fact that- one of its members. Air Ron King, had. the honour of being chosen «s one of the AH Blacks. His brother firemen extended to him their very best wishes for good health, to enjoy what should be a very pleasant trip, and have no doubt that by the end of their playing season the rugbyites on the other side of the world will h'.ive realised that a Hokitika fireman has been let loose among them. On New Year’s Eve the brigade reorganised th e old custom of holding a display ot fireworks, and judging by the public voice they were much appreciated. Regret was expressed that through a change in the personnel of the local Fire Board, they had lost a friend and staunch supporter in Air Ken Ills,in, of the 1.0-A. Insurance >Coy. but they still ' hope to meet him on some of his business trips to the Coast.

The harmony and goodfellowship of the brigade continues as always, and he wished to thank the officers and members for their able assistance during f.e year.

The secretary reported that the receipts for the year amounted to £lsl 16s lOd, and the expenditure to £l4O 13s 7d, leaving a credit . balance of £ll 3s 3, but with outstanding accounts totalling £23 Is 9d. A donation of £2 from AH's Shadbold was received with thanks. Ihe report and balance sheet were received and adopted. Dept. Supt. Ross expressed his regret that- Foreman AlcGregor was at present in hospital, and it was resolved to write expressing best wishes for ids speedy recovery. The foreman of No 4 station reported that the recent flood had scoured the gravel approach, and it was resolved to ask the Borough Council to give the necessary attention to the mattei. Offers to supply music for the annual ball, were received and that of the 'Rhythm Dance Band was accepted. The officers reported that the various gear under their charge was in good orderThe election of officers resulted m the unanimous re-election of Supt, AlcTnVlsh, and Dept. Suftt. Ross, and Secretary Lakin, who expressed their appreciation of the confidence reposed in them again. The roll was then called and members spent an hour in pleasant harmony, before dispersing. .
