In reply to South Africa’s first innings total of 443, Derbyshire made '236, Hodgkinson in bis first county match batted well for 44. Other scores were 0. p ( ,p e 38, Smith 33, Carrington 33, Worthington 32. Bowling for the visitors, Bell took 3 for 67, Langton 2 for 58, Vincent 4 for 61, and Tomlinson 1 for 41. South Africa did not enforcb the follow-on, and in their second innings, bad scored 168 for the loss of three wickets (Siedle 80 not out. Rowan 33, Dalton 29 not out). Siedle and Rowan were painfully slow, th. e . former storing four runs in forty minutes.
